Ed Mowery
Hi All,
I won’t be making the reunion but I thought it would be cool to let you all know what I have been doing the past 20 YEARS. Can’t believe it’s been this long already! Feels like yesterday I was sitting at the pond or at dead dog, listening to Slayer, smokin a fat one, and wishing I wasn’t there!
I graduated high school by the skin of my teeth. If any of you remember I was never one that wanted to stay in high school or Los Alamos. I wanted to get out to the real world and experience music at its fullest. I thank my parents for busting my ass and making me finish high school! I needed that piece of paper later in life.
Very shortly after graduation I moved to Albuquerque and played in a band called Fallen Idols for about a year and then decided to move the band to Seattle to check out that scene since Los Angeles was, and still is, so cut throat at the time. Seattle was cool but not so cool for a death metal band. We made the best of it by getting a manager and playing out and rehearsing a lot. We practiced every night straight for almost a year! It got the best of us though and we broke up, hence the name, but we did a recording and video for public access TV. It was a great experience in that band and it was an integral part of who I am today as a musician which I just recently have learned about myself after coming back to New Mexico.
Not even a month after Fallen Idols hit the shit can I moved to Tampa Florida to play with some people I knew from Albuquerque that moved to Florida when I moved to Seattle. The band idea was a good one but it pretty much crapped out within two weeks of getting to Florida. It sucked but there was an audition on the horizon that I jumped all over. In 1992 I auditioned for legendary death metal band Nocturnus, as bassist, and after a couple sessions I got the gig to do a European tour and MTV Europe video. So we hit the stage within a month after that. We played 3 shows in Tampa with other well-known death metal bands and they went well! We then hit the road and toured Europe for 2 months. Best experience of my life! I wouldn’t trade it in for anything. One thing I did learn about the road is it is not all fun and partying. Don’t get me wrong it was a shitload of fun but it was also hard fucking work and I learned that I love that about it! I love everything about making music and I never stopped after high school. I will be an old man in a rickety old rocking chair playing metal until I can’t anymore! You can have my guitar when you pry it from my dead cold hands!
Well all things/bands seem to come to an end and Nocturnus broke up in late 1993. After that break up I kept my musicianship up to speed but I decided I was tired of just barely making it by to do music so I became a fine dining chef. I liked it in the beginning but I found that when you are a chef that is all you are and all that you will be unless a change happens! A chef’s hours are 70- 85 hours a week and I had no life other than food and the restaurant I was in. So that being said I gave the middle finger to being a chef and decided to go back to school for Electronic Engineering and Computer Science which I graduated on the Dean’s list with honors and a 4.0 I might add. Imagine that?! During my schooling I got a call from the Nocturnus guys wanting to give it another shot. I jumped all over it! I transferred my credits down to Tampa and we started it back up again. We were pretty successful in getting another record deal and I debuted as the new singer of the band. I was then singer/bassist and was given a warm welcome by the existing fans of Nocturnus. That meant an awful lot coming from them! We did some of the metal festivals around the US and then the old feelings started surfacing between some of the members and we eventually broke up again. I did get another International release under my belt as well as my first DVD release. Can’t complain there!
The day Nocturnus broke up again in 2001 I decided it was time to stop joining bands and start my own. To this day I am working with that band. Tiwanaku (tee-wa-na-koo) is the name of the band. I know weird name but you can bet no other metal band has the balls to use it! HA! If you want to take a listen go to www.tiwanakuband.com Tiwanaku has been through many members and the musicians on the website are not in the band anymore. Wade Black is playing with members from King Diamond and Richard Christy hung up his drumsticks for comedy and is the sick fucker on the Howard Stern Show. Both of those guys I was in another band with called Leash Law. I hated the name then and still do but it was a great experience! This was more of a Judas Priest/Iron Maiden type band. I started my professional recording experience on that record. It pretty much turned into another album under my belt but it was a great experience. The band was done as soon as the album came out though. That was when Richard got his gig on the Howard Stern Show. It was a huge dream of his so I was cool with it! Anyway Tiwanaku is all new people now and we are going stronger than ever and looking toward the future. I am the singer, guitarist, keyboard player, recording/mixing engineer and one of two composers of the band. Yes I wear many hats! I am very busy with Tiwanaku right now and we are recording every chance we can get. We plan to record 30-40 songs before the winter months of 2008. I also work as a technical salesman down here in Albuquerque by day. As you can see I am swamped busy with so much to do. This is why I will not be making the reunion. Just too busy to breathe and as you all know I am 38 and not getting any younger so I better hit the iron while it’s hot! My family and friends are all supporting me on my latest adventure and I hope all of you do too! There is a lot more to my story but I have highlighted the key points for you. Who needs all the bad stuff right?
