Jamie Aslin
Twenty years, where does the time go… It feels like yesterday when we were at our 10th. Anyway, I’ll give a synopsis of the last twenty years. I went to NMSU after graduation to study Sports Medicine (roomed with Ian Andrews for first two years until he left for Alaska) and graduated in 1992 (roomed with Travis Ireland for the last two years). Las Cruces was a blast, as it was far enough away from Los Alamos to experience being on your own, but you always felt at home as so many people from Los Alamos were there. I attended one semester of graduate school, before I decided to join the work force as I got married to Keri Meyer (class of 1991). We moved to Palm Springs, CA for a job at a Sports Medicine Clinic and had our first child (Austin) in 1993. We felt the need to be closer to family, so we moved back to Los Alamos in 1994 as I accepted a job at LANL as a graduate assistant at the Wellness Center. I finished my Masters Degree in 1996, and was hired on permanently as the Security Fitness Coordinator, and have been here ever since. We had our second child (Haley) in 1998 (couple days after our 10 year reunion). Our marriage ended in 2000 sometime after the Cerro Grande Fire, and as Forrest Gump says, “That’s all I got to say about that”.
My job at LANL is great, as I have the opening shift (5am – 2pm) which leaves the afternoons free to do other things. I’ve taught a sports medicine class at LAHS, I helped two Indian Pueblos start Wellness programs for their tribes, taught five years at Santa Fe Community College, helped local schools as an Athletic Trainer, played a lot of golf, and coach baseball. I started coaching my son’s team about 10 years ago, and have taken them to consecutive undefeated regular seasons and district championships. Out of this came an opportunity to coach for our alma mater. I just completed my fifth season with the LAHS baseball program, and am the Head JV Coach. Next year, I’ll have my son’s team coming up to the JV level as they will be freshman (man I’m getting old).
I was very fortunate to stay in Los Alamos, as I met the love of my life, Michelle. We’ve been friends for the past fifteen years, and after we each went through a divorce, we decided to start dating. We quickly realized that we belonged together and were married in 2006. The funny thing is, we each have a son and a daughter, and each are in the same grade (my son in 8th grade, her daughter in 8th grade, my daughter in 4th grade, her son in 4th grade). There is never a dull moment or a free weekend in the Aslin household, as all of are kids are very active in sports and school activities.
It is amazing how many “classmates of 88” that still live in Los Alamos. It seems like we were all in such a hurry to get out of here after high school, but some of us found our way back. I must say that Los Alamos is a great place to raise a family. With that said, I look forward to seeing everyone this summer, as I’ve lost touch with a lot of you and hope to hear in person what everyone has been up to. Until this summer, I’ve attached a couple of pictures of our family for you guys to view...
