Scott Beguin

Scott Beguin Timeline

– While I consider myself to be in the Class of 1988, I actually graduated a year earlier when my parents pulled me out of school due to their “issues with the administration” and I received my GED in order to attend music school.

- 89 – I was accepted to and attended the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT), which is part of the Musician’s Institute located in Hollywood, CA. The instructors were phenomenal. Living in Hollywood with only a skateboard as transportation was an experience. Being on my own in LA as a 17 year old – priceless. Received my 1st Dan in Chung do Kwan style Tae Kwon Do.

– Left Hollywood to attend The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA with my sweetheart, Kristi (Aamodt) (LAHS class of ’89).

- 1992 – Kristi and I relocated from Olympia to Albuquerque so that I could pursue a musical opportunity with the Albuquerque band Red, White, and Black. Spent the next year practicing daily, and performing weekly. Toured the west coast with Red, White, and Black; another Albuquerque band, Treadmill (for whom I also played drums when their drummer quit the week before the tour began), and Seattle band Coffin Break.

– 1993 – Decided to head back to Evergreen with Kristi. Pursued Aikido, photojournalism studies initially, and played in a variety of musical projects ranging from Washington logger rock, free-form jazz, punk rock, performance improvisation, funk, fusion, and progressive. By chance, I landed a highly sought-after spot in a Senior Evergreen program called Ecology, Awareness, and Exposure (EEA), which Kristi was also accepted into. Evergreen, a very non-traditional school, utilizes integrative programs for learning.  EEA involved a 12-day silent meditation to start off the class. (Yep, that meant no talking, no reading, no writing, no media of any sort for 12 straight days, oh yeah and the women were segregated from the men.) No better way to get to know your classmates than to live with them without talking or looking them in the eyes! After the meditation we headed out to Leavenworth, WA and Smith Rock, OR where we spent weeks perfecting our rock-climbing techniques and proficiency with gear in order to perform lichen biology studies on vertical rock faces.

– Back to Los Alamos.  This decision resulted when after multiple days of driving hundreds of miles on crowded highways to go rock climbing or mountain biking typically ended in a deluge ruining the outing.  Back to little LA, we said, where we can climb and bike out the front door.

– Kristi and I tied the knot officially. I began work at Trailbound Sports as the climbing buyer and bike/ski mechanic. Continued to play in a variety of musical projects. Enjoyed a lot of Tae Kwon Do (received my 2nd Dan in TKD), rock and ice climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and other outdoor adventures.

– Kristi and I and my folks decided to pursue our own business, Dynamic Outdoor Mountain Experience (DOME), an adventure guide service and high-end outdoor store. Trailbound and Sportsbag—longtime fixtures in LA, had gone under due to poor management. We thought we’d give it a try.

– Cerro Grande dealt a blow. My parents, my Grandmother and Uncle, and ourselves came back to town to find a pile of ashes and debris for homes.

– 2002 – Endured the process of building a home and dealing with insurance companies and FEMA. Took up downhill mountain bike racing. Received my 3rd Dan in TKD in 2001.

– Daughter Nena Quarry born on July 15. On September 21, I underwent the process of a fluke bike accident (that occurred just steps from my home), subsequent coma, head injury, and the first steps to recovery. After several months of decision, we decided to close the DOME retail doors, and I moved the bike service shop to my home.

– 2004 – Mostly recovery, which was helped by my never-ending diligence in practicing music. Drumming, it turns out, is very helpful in recovering from a head injury. Began teaching drums again, played with several musical projects, and continued with rock and ice climbing and mountain biking.

– Daughter Signe Arete born at home on October 30. Received my 4th Dan in TKD.

to Present – Hustling bike work, pursuing more serious music endeavors, Cactipus, which is located in LA, and helping out my family by being a stay-at-home Dad for the majority of each week. And what are all those things that really matter?  Continuing to practice drums, martial arts, and mindful parenting; climbing ice in the winter and rock year round; cycling, art, photography, hunting, fishing, and seeing what new discoveries are to be had.
